Orange Peppermint Lard Balm
When I purchased half of a heritage red wattle hog from Rustic Farms, this past year, they offered me a “bucket of lard.” I've been in the habit saving my bacon fat for cooking chicken breasts, adding flavor to eggs or soups etc so I thought “why not?” and brought it home.
After a few months of a huge bucket of Lard sitting in my refrigerator, with only a small amount gone from cooking, I decided to research other uses for Lard. I was surprised to find that you can make soap and balm from it and decided to give it a try!
After cooking it on the stove the kids and I added our essential oils and set it in the fridge to allow it to set up. We were all shocked when a few hours later it had turned from clear to opaque and had become relatively solid.
Annabelle had been struggling with a sore bum for a couple of days after indigestion and after one day of using our homemade balm she was healed and happy. Now she asks for her “butt cream" every day!
It has a soft consistency and melts against the warmth of skin. It is a wonderful moisturizer and skin barrier and provides a calming coolness from the peppermint. I'm excited to experiment with other combinations and consistency, stay tuned for what’s next!
